Food co-ops are non-profit organisations which offer an infrastructure for the procurement and distribution of sustainable products in the region. The products are regional/biological and come from local farmers, market gardens, apiaries, etc.
The advantages of such products are manifold:
- The consumers know what they buy and eat.
- More transparency between producers, products and consumers is given.
- Very often, there is the possibility to visit the farmers and see how they work.
- Therefore, a special connection is developed between producers and consumers.
- Local trades and farmers are supported and new forms of cooperation can be built.
- There is a place where farmers can bring their products and consumers can buy them. Due to that, new social places for citizens are created.
At present, there are approximately 25 food co-ops in Upper Austria (in the whole of Austria about 75).
