The PEAKapp is a mobile application especially developed to sensitize consumers to energy consumption. Moreover, it offers incentives to save energy.
PEAKapp is a research and demonstration project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The aim of PEAKapp is to use a specially developed mobile application to sensitize consumers to their energy consumption and to use various incentives to save energy and/or shift electricity loads. The application has been developed in such a way that it provides electricity consumers with very precise information on their electricity consumption on the three relevant scales: energy in kWh, monetary in € and climate impact in CO2 saved.
By means of targeted push messages, the user gets incentives to consume electricity when it is particularly favourable, i.e. when it mainly comes from renewable sources such as the wind and the sun. A further function is the benchmark system, which enables users to compare their energy consumption with those of comparable households. A special algorithm was developed using econometric methods to ensure the best possible comparability. Another innovation is the PEAKpoker, a specially developed learning game, with the objective to sensitize consumers to their electricity consumption. Users bet on their energy consumption for the next day. On the next day, the bets are compared with the actual consumption. The better the estimation, the more points can be achieved. Subsequently, the players can share their achievements on social networks and compete with each other. The results of 69 weeks of field testing with more than 1500 Upper Austrian households between June 2017 and October 2018 show a solid interest among consumers in PEAKapp during the whole duration of the field test, as well as empirically proven potential for load-shifting and increased household energy efficiency.
