BELT is a non-profit organization aiming at developing the bio-energy sector in La Tuque, including renewable fuels. BELT’s mission is to implement the first large scale wood biorefinery that will produce drop-in biodiesel from the large amounts of wood residues from forest harvesting in Québec Haut-Saint-Maurice area. The main partners of the project are Neste Corporation and the Atikamekw nation. More than 50 researchers in Canada and abroad have worked or are working on various feasibility studies put into place to ensure the success of the project, ranging from social acceptability and environmental impact, to technology assessment or autonomous trucks for biomass delivery. The project aims at creating around 500 jobs in the area, diversifying a mono-industrial autonomy as well as strongly reducing CO2 emissions in the province.
