The Digital Village is an initiative by and with local citizens. The aim is to make the best possible use of the opportunities offered by digitization to face the everyday challenges of rural life.
The aim of the Digital Village Bavaria project is to take advantage of the potential offered by digitization and to implement it in model regions. The focus here is on the question of how the supply of rural areas can be supported with the help of new information and communication technologies and, thus, how the future viability of these areas can be secured.
In addition to the two model projects already running – in the Steinwald Alliance and in the Spiegelau-Frauenau association of municipalities – a further model project was launched in the Alpine region. The regional initiative Integrated Rural Development (ILE) and the eco-model region „Waginger See – Rupertiwinkel“ won the competition to participate in the „Digital Alpine Village“. On 10 September 2018, the Bavarian State Government launched a special project, „Digital Hörnerdörfer Allgäu“, with a focus on tourism. This project is in the conception phase and is to be implemented parallel to the „Digital Alpine Village“ starting from the beginning of 2019.
A further model project, „Digital Health Village“, started 2018 in Upper Rodachtal.
There is also a „Digital Village“ community to support the exchange of experience between all interested communities. To this end, digital communication channels will be provided, which communities can use to inform themselves, exchange information and, for example, present via an online atlas.
