The Eberstalzell community is a Demo-region for methods to handle more electricity with existing grids. The motivation is an upcoming number of photovoltaic panels, electric heating as well as cooling and electric vehicles.
The installation of photovoltaic panels on roof tops is becoming more popular as it is promoted by the Austrian federal government in order to reach the climate goals (#mission2030). Local capacities of the power supply chains are limited and now an enhancement is necessary. There are several projects with partners from scientific and industrial fields on how existing electricity grids can be made more capacious and this is demonstrated in the Eberstalzell community. A major component within these research projects is the smart metering system which is in the meantime deployed all over the grid. A voltage monitoring solution integrated in the smart metering system is actually put into practice of daily business in operation and planning. In the region of Eberstalzell the voltage controllers and a power-quality monitoring system are still in operation to gather data for long term analysis.
